Dharma Chandra Wickremasinghe of Malalagama, Koggala

Introduction

Dharmachandra Wickremasinghe hailed from the well known Wickremasinghe family of Malalagama, Koggala, was a Landed Proprietor & a cousin of the legendary Martin Wickremasinghe, the famous writer/novelist from the same village. He also was gazetted on many occasions to act for his brother, who was the Registrar of Births, Marriages & Deaths for the Division.

His father was Lamahewage Don Daniel de Silva (Loku Opisara) of Malalagama, Koggala, while the latter's brother, Lamahewage Don Bastian de Silva (Punchi Opisara) was the father of Martin Wickremasinghe.

A " Police Opisara" (Police Officer, Vidane , Arachchi) was vested with limited police powers for crime prevention/detection, & appointments were usually hereditary & appointees were from influential families in the area with a good education.

Don Daniel 's ancestral home appears to have been demolished along with other houses in the area to make way for the construction of the Koggala Airstrip prior to the Second World War. The residents of the village were settled elsewhere. However, the ancestral home of his brother, Don Bastian appears to have escaped the demolition process, possibly due the intervention of his son, Martin Wickremasinghe. It now houses the Wickremasinghe museum.

මාටින් වික්‍රමසිංහගේ සීයා වූ කොග්ගල මලලගම ළමා හේවගේ දොන් ජුවානිස් ඩි සිල්වා ( උපත 1830 පමණ) සහ ආච්චි වූ කුඩා විදානගේ දියුණු හාමි යන දෙපොළ පදිංචිව සිටියේ කොග්ගල “ගිම් පතලිය” නමැති පෙදෙසෙහිය. ඔවුන්ට දරුවෝ හතරදෙනෙක් වූහ.

ඔවුන් ඒ ගමේ පිළිගත් වැදගතුන් වූහ. තෝම්බුවල සඳහන් වන ආකාරයට ඉඩම් හිමියන් වූ ඉහත දෙ සොහොයුරෝ ව්‍යාපාරික කටයුතු වල ද යෙදුණහ. එකල වැදගත් නිලයක් වූ " පොලිස් ඔපිසර ” නිලයට ( ගම්මුලාදෑනි) තනතුරට දොන් දානියල් ද සිල්වා පත්කල අවස්ථාවේදී ඔහු වික්‍රමසිංහ නම ගත්තේ ය. නමුත් ඔපිසරකම දිගට ම කරගෙන යෑම සිය ව්‍යාපාරික කටයුතුවලට අවහිරයක් වූ බැවින් දොන් දානියල් වික්‍රමසිංහ පොලිස් නිලයෙන් ඉල්ලා අස්විය.

එයින් හිස් වූ ඔපිසරකමට පත් කරන ලද්දේ ඔහුගේ බාල සොහොයුරා ( සහ මාටින් ගේ පියා ද වූ) ළමා හේවගේ දොන් බස්තියන් ඩි සිල්වා ය.

එකල පොලිස් ඔපිසර කමට හෙවත් ගම්මුලාදෑනි තනතුරට රජයේ වැටුපක් හිමි නොවීය. එ බැවින් ම ඉංග්‍රීසි ආණ්ඩුව විසින් එකී තනතුරුවලට පත් කරන ලද්දේ වැටුපකින් ජීවත් විය යුත්තන් නොවන ගමේ ප්‍රභූ තත්ත්වයෙහි සිටි අයවලුන් ය.

දොන් බස්තියන් වික්‍රමසිංහ ගාල්ලේ බලපිටියේ ලියනගේ තොච්චොහාමි සමග විවාහ විය. ඔවුන්ට දරුවෝ දහ දෙනෙක් විය. මුල් අට දෙනාම ගැහැනු දරුවන් ය. දහ වැන්නාද දැරියකි. 1890 මැයි 29 වෙනිදා ගිං පතලිය පුංචි ඔපිසර ගෙදර උපන් නව වැන්නා වූයේ මාටින් වික්‍රමසිංහය.

දෙවන ලෝක සංග්‍රාමයේ දී ආණ්ඩුවේ නියෝග මත කොග්ගල අවට ජනයාට ගම් බිම් අතහැර දමා යෑමට සිදු විය. ඉංග්‍රීසි හමුදාව එහි ගෙවල් දොරවල් කඩා බිඳ දැමීය. දොන් දානියල් වික්‍රමසිංහගේ ආරච්චි ගෙදරද කැඩුණි. නමුත් පුංචි ඔපිසර ගෙදර ඉතුරු විය.

ලමා හේවගේ දොන් මාර්ටින් වික්‍රමසිංහ ලෙස කොග්ගල ජිංපතලිය ගමේ උපත ලැබූ එතුමා, 1925 නොවැම්බර් මස තිස් වෙනිදා කතලුවේ, බාලගේ (බලගේ) ප්‍රේමා ඩි සිල්වා කුල කුමරිය සමඟ විවාහ විය. ඔවුන්ට දරුවන් හය දෙනෙක් ය:

"During the period mentioned above, the village consisted of a little over hundred houses. The land area included four hilly grounds and in between them in the valleys were a few patches of paddy land and vegetable plots. In this village were four prominent houses called Kanda, Puwakwatta, Hena, and Udaha. The roofs of the houses were mostly tiled while a few were thatched with cadjans. The walls were wattle and daub or made of earth and lime plastered and lime washed. There was only one grandiose house namely Udaha(later “Sigiri”), with it’s double parapet walls built according to the contour of the land and two garages to house a car and a rubber tyred Moratuwa Buggy cart. Here lived Proctor Darley Wickramasinghe, a leading Lawyer of the Galle Bar, and an elder * brother of the celebrated author and socialist Martin Wickramasinghe. There was no Buddhist temple at Hennatota but the Kumara Maha Vihayara at Kumarakanda served the devotees in their religious observations. (*Note : Darley Wickremasinghe was a cousin of Martin Wickremasinghe).

Early in life, on the death of his brother, Samuel de Silva Wickremasinha in 1918, Dharma Chandra was saddled with the responsibility of being the guardian of his brother' s three children & the Administrator of his brother's estate. (Gazette No. 7041 Part II Legal p. 642 of Aug. 1, 1919).

He was a well respected person in the community in the area in which he lived as he had a deep concern & abiding interest in the welfare of the less fortunate people there .

He married Yasawathie de Silva , daughter of Mr. & Mrs.H. K. A. de Silva of Batawala, Weligama. Her siblings : Wimaly, Gunawathie, Karunawathie, Karunaratne, Sugunawathie, Dayaratne, Wijeratne.

He was a mentor & source of strength to many of the junior doctors who worked at the hospital. He was a Founder Member of the Collge of Anaesthesiologists of Sri Lanka. He worked till the age of 73 years , as there were no Anaesthetist to replace him at the Galle Hospital.

Dr. Bertie married Sita de Silva , d. ................, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ginige Simon de Silva. Her siblings : Walter, Beatrice, Violet, Shelton, Percy.

කොග්ගල මලලගම “ඔෆිසර ගෙදර” සොයා ගැනීම
(40 වසරකට පෙර මතක සටහනක්)

මහාචාර්ය ජෝශප් නීඩ්හැම් විසින් මාර්ටින් වික්‍රමසිංහයන් හඳුන්වනු ලැබුවේ “කොග්ගල මහා ප්‍රාඥයා” යනුවෙන්. ඉන්පසු ඒ හැඳින්වීම සාහිත්‍ය හා සංස්කෘතික ක්ෂේත්‍රයේ තහවුරුව පිහිටා සිටියා.

මාර්ටින් වික්‍රමසිංහයන් උපන්නේ කොග්ගල මලලගම. කොග්ගල නමින් හැඳින්වෙන්නේ ගිංපතලිය, මලලගම, බටුවන්තුඩාව, වෑදූව, හම්බුව, දොඹගහවත්ත, ඔසුපත, මාගල්තොට යන නමින් යුතු ගම් කීපයක් බව වික්‍රමසිංහයන් තමාගේ “කළුනික සෙවීම” පොතේ කියා තිබෙනවා.

වික්‍රමසිංහයන් උපන්නේ කොග්ගල මලලගම පිහිටි ඔහුගේ මුල් ගෙදර. මෙය හැඳින්වුණේ “ඔෆිසර ගෙදර” යන නමින්. වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ පියා ගමේ ඔෆිසර මහත්තයා. වෙද මහත්තයා සිටි ගේ “වෙද ගෙදර” නමිනුත්, ඉස්කෝලේ මහත්තයා සිටි ගේ “ගුරු ගෙදර” නමිනුත් හැඳින්වීම සාමාන්‍යයෙන් ගැමියන්ගේ සිරිතක්. (ගම්මු විසින් වික්‍රමසිංහයන් අමතනු ලැබුවේ “ඔෆිසර අප්පු” කියායි.)

දෙවැනි ලෝක යුද්ධ අවදියේදී කොග්ගල වටකොට ගුවන් තොටක් හා හමුදා කඳවුරක් පිහිටවනු ලැබූ බැවින් ගමේ ගෙවල් දොරවල් සියල්ල කඩා බිඳ දැමුණා. එහෙත් ජාතියේ වාසනාවට වික්‍රමසිංහයන් උපන් “ඔෆිසර ගෙදර” පමණක් ඉතිරි වුණා. එසේ වූයේ එක්තරා නිලධාරිනියක මෙය තම නිල නිවස ලෙස පරිහරණය කළ බැවින්.

පනස් ගණන්වල එක්තරා දිනක වික්‍රමසිංහයන් තම ගම බලන්න යනවා. (තමා ‍එවර කොග්ගල ගියේ මවගේ තුරුල්ලෙන් ඉවත් කරනු ලැබූ දරුවකු යළිත් මවගේ තුරුල්ල සොයා යන්නාක් මෙන් යැයි කියා තිබෙනවා) එහෙත් මුරකාරයෙක් ඔහු වළක්වනවා. ගමට ඇතුළුවන්ට නම් ඩීයාරෝ මහතාගෙන් පර්මිට් එකක් ගත යුතු බවයි ඔහු කියන්නේ.

“අපේ ගමට යන්න අවසර ගන්නත් ඕනෑ ද?”

එසේ අසන වික්‍රමසිංහයන් රියට නැඟ ආපසු යන්නට යනවා.

වික්‍රමසිංහයන් උපන් නිවෙස යළි සොයා ගැනෙන්නේ ඊටත් අවුරුදු කීපයකට පසුවයි. ඒ සඳහා මූලිකව මැදිහත් වන්නේ ප්‍රවීණ ලේඛකයකු හා සාහිත්‍යධරයකු වන ගුණසේන විතාන. 1959 දී පමණ කැලෑව පීරමින් කොග්ගල කිඹුලා ඇළ ඔස්සේ මලලගමට යන ඔහු වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ ඥාති සොහොයුරු රෙක්ස් වික්‍රමසිංහ සමඟ එක්ව වික්‍රමසිංහයන් උපන් නිවෙස සොයා ගන්නවා.

මේ සිද්ධිය පාදක කරගෙන ගුණසේන විතාන මෑතදී අලුත් පොතක් ලියා පළකළා. ඒ “කොග්ගල ප්‍රාඥයා - උපන් නිවස සොයා යෑම සහ ඔහුගේ මෙහෙවර හඳුනා ගැනීම”.

යුද්දෙ කාලේ ගමෙන් බැහැරව වෙනත් ප්‍රදේශ කරා ගිය වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ ඥාතීන් පවා සිතුවේ ඔෆිසර ගෙදර ඒ වන විට සුන්බුන් කර ඇති බවයි. ගුණසේන විතානට මුණගැසෙන වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ වැඩිමහල් සහෝදරියකගේ පුතකු වන ජී. එම්. ටී. ද සිල්වා මෙසේ කියා තිබෙනවා.

“ඔය සුද්දෝ අපේ ගෙවල් දොරවල් විනාශ කරලා. හිරිගලත් ඩයිනමයිට් දමලා විනාශ කළ සුද්දෝ අපේ මාමලගෙ ගෙය ඉතුරු කරාවිද?”

එහෙත් එයින් අධෛර්යවත් නොවන විතාන මහතා වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ ඥාති සහෝදරයකු වන රෙක්ස් වික්‍රමසිංහ හමුවී ඔහු සමඟ කොග්ගල යනවා. ඒ ගමනෙදි තමයි වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ මහගේ සොයා ගන්නේ.

මෙම නිවෙස සොයා ගැනීමෙන් පමණක් නොනවතින විතාන මහතා එය යළි වික්‍රමසිංහයන් වෙත පැවරීමට ද දරන්නේ මහත් පරිශ්‍රමයක්. එහි ප්‍රතිඵලයක් වශයෙන් 1962 දී වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ 70 වැනි උපන් දිනය නිමිත්තෙන් රාජ්‍ය මට්ටමේ උත්සවයක් පවත්වා නිවෙස වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ට භාරදෙනවා. එදින මෙම උත්සවය වෙනුවෙන් ගුණසේන විතාන හා උදය දේවනාරායන එක්ව සමරු කලාපයක් ද නිකුත් කරනවා. “මගේ මහ විදුහල ගැමි ජීවිතයයි” යන නමින් යුතු වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ ලිපිය ඇතුළත් වන්නේ එම කලාපයේ.

වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ නිවස ද ඇතුළු අක්කර අටකින් යුතු භූමි භාගයේ දැන් (කාලයක පටන්) ජනකලා කෞතුකාගාරයක් පිහිටුවා තිබෙනවා. එය වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ සිහිනයක් සැබෑ කරලීමක්. වික්‍රමසිංහ සමාධිය පිහිටා ඇත්තේ ද මේ භූමි භාගයේමයි. භෂ්මාවශේෂයට අමතරව වික්‍රමසිංහ පොත් නාමාවලිය ඇතුළත් තඹපත් මංජුසාව ද මෙහි නිදන් කර තිබෙනවා.

වික්‍රමසිංහයන් උපන් නිවස මා මුල්වරට දුටුවේ ධර්මසිරි ගමගේ ප්‍රමුඛ “යොවුන් පහන් වැට” කණ්ඩායම කොග්ගල වික්‍රමසිංහ උපන් භූමියේ පැවැත්වූ සාහිත්‍ය කලා වැඩමුළුවට සහභාගිවන්නට ගිය ගමනේදී. ඉන්පසු තවත් අවස්ථා දෙකකදී පමණ මා එහි ගොස් තිබෙනවා. එවක වික්‍රමසිංහ ජනකලා කෞතුකාගාරය භාරව සිටියේ පසුකලෙක අකාලයේ මියගිය සිරිල් සිරිවර්ධන මිතුරා. එක් අවස්ථාවකදී ඔහු එම භූමි භාගයේ පිහිටි සුවිශේෂ ස්ථාන කරා අප රැගෙන ගියා.

“කජු කැලෑව තිබුණේ මෙතැන. ඔබට මතකනේ “මඩොල් දූවේ” එන කජු කොල්ලය.

සිරිල් අපට කිසියම් තැනක් පෙන්නමින් කියනවා.

“මෙතැන තමයි කිරිබබාගේ ගේ තිබුණේ. “අපේ ගමේ” එන කිරිබබා. මිනිහගෙ ඇත්ත නම “දිනෙස්හාමි”

සිරිල් තවත් තැනක් පෙන්වනවා. මේ විදියට සිරිල් “විරාගය” නවකතාවේ සඳහන් ගිංපතලිය, කයිසාරුවත්ත, ගෝම්පහුව, බණ්ඩාරවත්තේ ළිඳ, පන්සල අපිට පෙන්නුවා. අපිට “මඩොල් දූව” ට යන්න ඔරුවක් හොයලා දුන්නෙත් සිරිල්.

කොග්ගල ගිය ගමනේදී වික්‍රමසිංහ මැතිනිය සමඟ අප සිටින   මේ ඡායාරූපය ගත්තේ වික්‍රමසිංහයන්ගේ දියණියක වන රූපා සපරමාදු මහත්මිය වීම විශේෂත්වයක්.

(රූපා සපරමාදු මහත්මිය ද පසුගියදා අප අතරින් වෙන්වූ අතර මා මිත්‍ර සුනිල් මිහිඳුකුල 2017 අප්‍රේල් මාසයේ දිවියෙන් සමුගත්තේය.
